You’re ready for a change, but painting the whole house feels like a bigger project than you want right now. Maybe the hallway is scuffed, the guest room needs attention or you’ve never liked the living room color.

You can absolutely start with a few rooms. The key is choosing where to begin and thinking about how those spaces connect.

Start With What Bothers You Most

Walk through your home and notice where fresh paint would make the biggest difference to your everyday life.

A busy entryway might need attention before a rarely used dining room. Or perhaps your dining room is the space you’d most enjoy refreshing. Consider a new color or interesting wallpaper in an unexpected place?

Look at the walls, ceilings and trim separately. If the ceiling looks good, it may not need painting just because the walls do. Ask for an estimate that separates those items so you can choose your priorities.

Consider the View Into the Next Room

You don’t need the same color throughout your home, but adjoining rooms should feel comfortable together.

Before choosing a color, look at it beside the flooring, trim and walls you’re keeping. Test a large sample and check it from the next room in daylight and evening lighting.

In an open floor plan, a wall may continue through several spaces without a natural stopping point. Painting that entire wall usually looks more intentional than changing colors halfway along it.

Make a Plan for Later

If you expect to paint more rooms eventually, choose a general color direction now. You can then tackle each space as your schedule and budget allow.

Keep a record of the paint brand, color and sheen, meaning how shiny the finish is. Label leftover paint by room, too.

Ask your painter to price rooms individually and as a group. Combining work may reduce repeated setup costs, but a smaller project can still be the right choice for you.
