How to Choose the Right Painting Company
You’ve decided it’s time to paint, so you search for “house painters near me.” Now you have a list of companies, a few recommendations and perhaps several very different prices.
How do you choose? Start by finding out what each company will actually do, how they’ll care for your home and who will be responsible for the finished work.
Look Beyond the Price
Two painting estimates can cover the same rooms and still include very different work.
One might include walls, ceilings, doors and trim. Another might cover only the walls. Preparation, repairs, paint products and the number of coats can differ, too.
Before comparing totals, ask for those details in writing. A clear estimate should help you understand what you’re paying for without having to guess.
Ask About Preparation
Fresh paint won’t fix loose caulk, damaged drywall or deteriorated wood.
For interior painting, ask how the crew will handle holes, cracks and damaged areas, and how they’ll protect your floors and furniture.
For exterior painting, discuss washing, peeling paint and wood repairs. Ask whether repair costs are included or will be priced separately once the condition is clearer.
You don’t need to know every painting term. A good contractor should be able to explain the work in everyday language.
Read Reviews for the Details
Look beyond the star rating and notice what homeowners say about the experience.
Did the crew arrive when expected? Was the house kept tidy? Did someone respond when questions came up? How were final touch-ups handled?
Look for reviews and project photos that relate to your plans. Cabinet painting, for example, requires different preparation from repainting a bedroom.
Know Who Will Be in Your Home
Ask who will oversee the project and whom you should contact during the work. Confirm that the company carries appropriate insurance and can provide proof.
It also helps to discuss the daily schedule, cleanup and access to the rooms being painted. If you work from home or have pets, mention that during the estimate so it can be part of the plan.
Ask about the written warranty, including what it covers and what it excludes.
Choose Someone You Feel Comfortable Asking Questions
You should feel comfortable saying, “Can you explain that?” or “Is there a way to do this in stages?”
A painting project is easier to manage when the scope, expectations and communication are clear from the beginning. Take the time to compare those details alongside the price.
